Pinned app buttons should keep their position when their last window closes

Gábor opened

Pinned buttons are grouped at the start of the taskbar. When I close a window of a pinned app, its window turns into a button and jumps to the front of the bar — so closing a window silently relocates a button.

My expected behaviour would be as on Windows: a pinned app has one fixed slot. Its windows are shown at that slot, and when the last window closes (or hidden), the slot stays exactly where it is — just without the running indicator. This practically means, that pinned app buttons and windows can be reordered together.

The benefit is that my muscle memory knows which apps should be next to each other, so I don't need to think where to look if I'm looking for one, independently if it has windows open or not.

Thanks for the suggestion, Gábor! I’ve implemented and tested this: pinned apps keep their position when their last window closes or the app restarts. Their windows appear together at that position, and you can drag the whole group between other tiles. The change is ready for the upcoming update.

Awesome, thanks a lot, can't wait! :)

2.5 got released, happy to hear your feedback

Gábor

Thanks a lot for the setting! I love the combined behavior, where basically a window (or a window group) can shrink to the app button when I close windows, and can re-open the window from the same usual position!

The only inconvenience I can see is that since the app buttons have a grayed effect, 1) they seem to be disabled buttons, and 2) the icons are less clear, so having a grayed/disabled app button between the other windows can be less instant to find. But I understand that the minimized state is using this style as well, and it could be also strange, why a not-running app looks more "active", than a running-but-minimized window. Somehow this was not an issue when I was using Windows (where the behavior is similar), probably there the logic of styles was a bit different. (I'm always happy to mull over UX, but can't always recommend a good solution.)

Thanks, Gábor! We’ll keep pinned and minimized app icons fully visible so they stay easy to recognize. Minimized windows will get a small, separate indicator, while the active-window highlight stays as it is. This will apply to both Classic and Liquid Glass in an upcoming update.

2.6 is released, please tell me your feedback

Gábor

Thanks for this, I think it works perfectly, for me personally it is really convenient this way.
